I didn't get a lot of information from Stevens and I still don't know his first name; he is very approachable, with a lively sense of humour, but manages to avoid talking about his private life. He is known to have served in the French Foreign Legion for nineteen years (which is where he met Professor Brown), following the death of his fiancée Isabelle. He fought during World War One and through his long service was awarded the rank of Adjudant, a high level for a Non-Commissioned Officer to achieve.

Stevens is technically over one hundred and thirty years old but in reality has missed most of that time by being brought forward to our present by the Professor. This time difference means that he seems slightly old-fashioned despite having adapted well to the modern age. He has impeccable manners and the upright bearing of a former soldier, with a rugged constiution to match. Perhaps he misses his time as a soldier because his love of the outdoors is shown by his hobbies.
