Wilberforce Barrington Brown is a bit of a mystery; we see him now as a cautious old man but occassionally somebody mentions an adventure that he had, or a narrow escape from danger, and we see that he wasn't always so responsible. He served in the French Foreign Legion for a number of years at the start of the 19th century but he has never said why; it has been suggested that he had enlisted after to get over a broken heart but the Professor will not talk about it (a gentleman does not bandy a lady's name).
By the time we meet Professor Brown he leads a much quieter life than he used to and  tries to live by the time travel rules that he devised with Jack Fletcher. Professor Brown´s father used time travel to his advantage when he was a younger man but then bitterly regretted it when his first wife was killed cossing a road; he grew paranoid and believed that the universe was trying to punish him for using his skills for his own benefit. Professor Brown knows that this is impossible but as he grew older he did start to question whether he had made the best use of his abilities. He now teaches others how to fix the broken bits of history.
