At first Nikolai is a bit of a mystery because he seems to be older than his actual age and he doesn't really fit in anywhere. He is a bit more serious than other fourteen year old boys but it is only because he has spent most of his time around adults and doesn't have any friends his own age. A lot of the things that he likes, such as music and films, have been influenced by the older people that he spends time with but he likes the newer things that Emily introduces him to. He has lived in the UK for a few years which is why his English is so good but he has always been home-schooled, first by his parents and then at Tempus Viator. He is very bright, and excellent at his studies, because he gets a lot of attention from the teachers and they have all given him a passion for learning new things. He does get to have fun, such as Quad biking with Coby or jumping with Rebecca, but he doesn't really know how to talk to kids his own age.
Nikolai spends most of Timekeepers on an emotional rollercoaster - his life starts to become even more fun as he makes friends with Emily and Thomas, and other kids at school, but by the end of the first book he has suffered a terrible personal loss and is left in great pain.
